Whangarei, is a mid sized city of about 60,000 people.While it is a town people tend to pass through, there are several interestig activities and locations worth taking a bit of time out to have a look at.An overnight stay will give you the opportunity to explore some of the following activities of interest. - Visit the Town Basin - art/craft galleries, nice cafes and restaurants, Clapham's Clock Museum, and a walk if you are feeling energetic.
- Claphams Clock Museum – “ famous in New Zealand” this museum has an excellent display of clocks and music boxes.It is in the Town Basin so easy to locate.
- Zion Wildlife Gardens for animal lovers. See the Lion man and his many African animals.
- Whangarei Falls – 5 kilometres from the town on the Ngungaruru Road to Tutukaka, this is a beautiful spot for a picnic.
- Whangarei Heads –this is a picturesque drive out past some lovely little bays and beaches,with arts and craft galleries along the way.
- Whangarei Museum and Kiwi House is a Heritage Park for some interesting native New Zealand birds and animals including the tuatara – our ancient reptile related to the dinosaur.
- Mairs Park – this has a lovely walkway and picnic areas
- Whangarei Reserve Quarry Gardens – in the Coronation Scenic Reserve
Outdoor Adventure Activities
- Tutukaka – this is a beautiful beach location for those wanting to try some Deep Sea Fishing, Diving, ( out to the Poor Knights Islands) snorkelling and kayaking. You can hire kayaks.
- Sky Dive – if you are needing that adrenaline rush there is a skydive waiting with views over the city, Tutukaka and this scenic coast to Bream Bay.Located at the Airport.
- Oakura – is a lovely long sandy family beach. With camping and a dive and fishing cruise available.
- Whananaki Beach - this whole coast is just magic. There is a very nice DOC camp right on the beach . You can enjoy beach and kauri forest trekking, if you want more than just the beach and the sea.
