New Zealand Travel Guides and Books

Reading to enhance your travel Experience!

A New Zealand travel guides and books selection you may like to buy or borrow from your library. It is good to read a wide selection of information, and a guide is handy to travel with, for quick consultations.I think you need to look beyond these guides for accommodation, activities, transport etc. They give a great overview, but can only ever give you a sample of options.
Travel Guide books are great but I am always dismayed when I see people wandering around with their Lonely Planet looking to only stay where they suggest. You can miss out on some wonderful opportunities by not looking further.Being flexible and either looking and booking on the internet, or checking with locals and tourist information bureaus in the country you are visiting will give you much better choices.

New Zealand Travel Guides and Books

There is a wide selection of Travel Guides. While Lonely Planet is probably the best known of the travel guides, and there are several different choices in the Lonely Planet range, there is quite a selection you could choose from.Check out

• New Zealand (Lonely Planet)

• The Rough Guide to New Zealand

• Fodor's New Zealand

• Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific(Lonely Planet Healthy Travel)

• Lonely Planet Tramping in New Zealand

• New Zealand Driving Holidays:29 New Zealand Itineraries and Touring Maps for the Independent Traveller-Reviewers give 5 stars.

NEW ZEALAND BOOKS

We have many excellent writers of both fiction and non fiction in New Zealand. I will endeavor to keep you up to date with some good New Zealand books from our authors of fiction.I have found it adds to your travel experience to read a fiction book set in the country you are in, in your spare moments as you are travelling around. You recognise names and places and can identify with the characters in the story.Which can be really exciting.

GOOD READS

Mr Pip by Lloyd Jones

This book was the winner of the Commonwealth WritersPrize 2007

An Extraordinary Life Sir Edmund Hillary by Alex Johmston

Our most respected and loved New Zealander.

Towards Another Summer by Janet Frame

A very personal book about her most unusual life.

Angel at My Table.

Another well known book by Janet Frame.

I’ll introduce you to some New Zealand travel books and make suggestions for other books and DVD’s that may be of interest.I include DVD’s because many non fiction books have DVD’s and books on the same topic. They may have been a TV programme originally.

NOTE: Check DVD's will work on your television system in your country.

Cookery Books

We have some wonderful New Zealand cookery books, with a delicious array of recipes. These can be a lovely gift, or something to take home and try. Most ingredients would be readily available wherever you live – although they may be called something different!

My recommended book is

Hunger for the Wild - by Al Brown & Steve Logan
This paper back book is a truly New Zealand recipe book, with wonderful stories and stunning photos of hunting, fishing, and preparing fresh food caught and sought from all sorts of locations around New Zealand. You get to see something of the hunting, shooting, fishing, outdoor lifestyle many New Zealanders love. Along with great recipes, many adaptable to anywhere. It really is an excellent read.
It was an extremely popular TV series- men just love it!The DVD's of the two series are also available and highly recommended. This book gives a wonderful insight into what New Zealand and New Zealanders are about.

Also look out for cookbooks by Jo Seagar, Annabel Langbein, Annabelle White, Julie Le Clerc and Zarbo-Mark McDonough

Fishing Books and Guides

With so many people interested in fishing there is a huge range of fishing books covering the different types of fishing.Trout fishing, deep sea fishing, rod casting.

Outdoor activities, bush walks, beaches, sports,New Zealand nature

We have New Zealand guide books on walks in the North Island and South Island, kayaking trips, best beaches, New Zealand gardens, Native flora and Fauna, native birds, wineries, our sports people, and much more. These are good books to have as you travel around, as they give you information and activities you can use as you go.

MAGAZINES

You should check out our magazines in book stores and supermarkets. We read more magazines per capita than in the US, UK or Australia. The quality of many magazines is excellent and these can be an interesting easily transported gift.

MY PERSONAL FAVOURITE

The New Zealand House and Garden is a wonderful magazine with a selection on New Zealand homes, gardens, wine, cheese, travel, etc and many people overseas have it delivered once they have read one.It gives a wonderful insight and overview of New Zealand life.I highly recommend you have a look if this type of mag appeals.
