Auckland restaurants
and dining to tickle your taste buds !
Auckland restaurants offer a huge range of eating experiences in all price ranges.New Zealand food is deliciously fresh and we have our own style of fusion cuisine. This is using our own produce with international flavours.Fresh seafood, meat, fruit and vegetables make our food a very tasty experience! Fine Dining in Auckland restaurants offers plenty of choice in both city and suburban locations.I will recommend a few I have tried and thoroughly enjoyed below. Also you can look at the review sites I have listed if you are not sure this is what you are looking for. There is nothing like reading what others enjoyed to help you make a choice. There is nothing nicer than sitting overlooking the beach as you enjoy a wonderful meal.Mission Bay, St Heliers, Devonport, Murray's Bay and Long Bay all have excellent beachside restaurants.
Mecca Restaurant
in the old Mission House at Mission Bay is very pleasant, as is
Hammerheads
on the waterfront.( just before Kelly Tarlton's) McHughs restaurant by Cheltenham beach near Devonport, has a nice lunch buffet. Both McHughs and
Long Bay Restaurant
have you feeling you are literally sitting on the sand.Others are across the road. Some of the best Auckland restaurants are in Parnell which has many good restaurants, mostly fine dining, so a little more expensive. The other strip with a good selection is Ponsonby Rd.good restaurants, mostly fine dining, Yet another mecca for popular restaurants Yet another mecca for popular restaurants is Jervois Rd, Herne Bay. Just off the bottom of Ponsonby Road it has some well known restaurants such as
Vinnie's
and I enjoyed a a wonderful French meal at
Villa d'Vine
in Jervois Rd. If you are wandering the shops in Newmarket I recommend you have lunch at
Zarbo's.
It is a little noisy but the food is great. The owner has authored several good cookbooks and there is a full delicatessen/specialty area.
Mikano
is a well known Auckland restaurant right by the water, (Mechanics Bay) and keeps you interested if it is sailing season. The rescue helicopters come and go just below too, so plenty of action to watch, with city lights for some sparkle. And the food is delicious. It is owned by one of Auckland's most reknowned restaurateurs. Viaduct Basin in the central downtown part of Auckland has a wideoffering of excellent restaurants. I can recommend-
Kermadec
and
Sails
If you like plenty of meat, WildFire Brazilian restaurantis a different experience. The Loaded Hog is a popular bar with meals, and in the actual basin there are any number of good restaurants with varying prices. Some other iconic Auckland restaurants are Cin Cin on Quay, or O'Connells. I have not tried these two personally.
Cheap Eats

Prefer Japanese? You will find Daikoku on Quay St,is a cheap but excellent value teppanyaki meal.Especially at lunch time.Further up Queen Street is Kura or Tanuki Cave a bar and restaurant. On the way up Queen Street you will find a food hall with a range of cheap food meals for day time.If you want cheap but tasty ethnic food in the evening, take a walk up past the Town Hall. On the left going up the hill, you will find Korean, Japanese, Thai, Chinese - a selection of mostly Asian food, for very reasonable prices. Not particularly smart decor, this is a historic part of Auckland, and the restaurants reflect that. The ambience makes up for the decor.Don't be put off.The food is great!
Dining Al Fresco
Aucklander's love dining al fresco. You will find some lovely cafes attached to most garden centres. These are very popular with locals as you have the restful plants and water features making a naturally enjoyable dining setting. There is always indoor and outdoor seating. Somehow there is nothing like dining al Fresco in the summer. These are in the suburbs so it would depend on your transport. You will find many Auckland cafes with outdoor areas, often tucked away behind, relatively unseen until you go in.
Country Dining
Many wineries also have excellent restaurants, where again you can sit out admiring the grapes. Waiheke Island has many options, as does Matakana, north of Auckland. Kumeu in West Auckland is another winery area, some with eating.

Allely House
is a lovely old converted villa I can highly recommend in Kumeu. The Hunting Lodge is also a nice rural eating venue.South Auckland has less choice for good restaurants. If you are going out to the Clevedon area which is a scenic rural drive I would recommend either stopping for the wine tasting at
Vin Alto
or making a booking and doing the full degustation. This is a 5 course meal with their own wines served to match the food.Much of the meat and produce is grown themselves and the home made pates, breads, mains and desserts are a fantastic meal. While you are waiting you can browse the wine museum items, or check out the liquers made on the premises. You get to taste one after your meal.Their limoncello is divine!
