Cable Bay Wine Tasting
Waiheke Island

by Gail
(Auckland)

Cable Bay Winery - Waiheke Island

Cable Bay Winery - Waiheke Island

We returned to Cable Bay having thoroughly enjoyed the wine tasting there the year before.

This modern Winery with restaurant and wedding facilities has stunning views over the harbour to Auckland City. The modern building has an art gallery and many art works and sculptures making interesting features.

It was busy..... but after a short wait we were given our glasses and the wine server managed to keep good track of where he was with the several groups he was serving....all at different stages of tasting the 8 different wines. He also divided his time with information and conversation on the various wines well....you didn’t feel you were just a number.

I am a real fan of Viognier and the Sweet Gloria Late Harvest 2009 Viognier was beautiful. Honey and fruity it was just how I enjoy this wine. It will improve with 3-5 years cellaring....I am not good at that!

The Waiheke Island Chardonnay 2007 was my pick...a creamy vanilla oaked chardonnay...just how I love it! However, when it came to choosing a bottle to take away my husband won out with the Marlborough Pinot Noir 2008... a delicious wine featuring plum and cherry flavours with a touch of herbs.

I have yet to eat at this award winning restaurant...it is on my “to do” list! But if time is short, it is the wrong time of day for a meal or you have to choose just one winery near to the wharf....Cable Bay won’t disappoint.
