Clothing for NZ South Island Holidays in April end
by Namrata

Hi There,
First of all thanks a lot for providing such a convenient platform to get info about anything and everything in New Zealand.
I would want to know on what clothing should I pack for my holidays with my hubby to the South Island, New Zealand during April 25th to May 1st.
And I also want to know what would be the best places /activities to enjoy in Christchurch as we will be there only for an evening. Lets say we arrive at 2 to Christchurch and have to leave next morning for our onward journey.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Hi Namrata
April in the South Island will be quite cool and could even be snow. I remember arriving in Queenstown 5th April and it was snowing...although it was very early. I think for New Zealand ....especially at that time of year, it is important to have layers, as some days may be quite warm....although maybe not for you coming from Singapore! But evenings could go down to 0 or minus 0 degrees celsius. We are already having some very cool nights.
Merino wool is excellent for wearing under other clothing. You may want to purchase here in New Zealand.I always take a sleeveless merino top and a long sleeved...I can then wear together if really cold...or one or the other. I suggest short and long sleeved T shirts or shirts, a warm jumper or cardigan, wind and water proof jacket, gloves and hat since you come from a very hot country.A scarf is nice if it is cold. Warm socks and good walking shoes with a good tread for bush walks etc
A track suit with warm under wear is good for bush or beach, and walking etc.Polypropylene is also good for warmth.
By layering clothing you can put on or take off as the temperature changes.... as it will. The South Island experiences very variable temperatures from day to day and you will have much colder nights than day temperatures.
Visiting Christchurch - You don't have a lot of time so I suggest having a look around the inner city by the old tram....you can get on and off on the circuit. Start at Cathedral Square, then see the Botanic Gardens, the Art Centre, Art Gallery etc You may like to take the gondola up the Port Hills and have dinner overlooking Lyttleton Harbour with the lights etc. Depending on what time you catch your plane you may have time to visit the International Antarctica Centre out by the airport.
I hope this is of help. Add further questions to this page if you have more you need to know.
Kind Regards,
Gail
