Explore Central Otago

There is much to find when you explore Central Otago. Founded by goldminers, Central Otago was once one of the most populated parts of the country. Since the late 1800’s when the gold mining declined it is now farming country. Amazing scenic landscapes attract tourists and locals wanting to enjoy fabulous scenic and active holidays in New Zealand.

One of the fruitbowls of New Zealand, Central Otago grows most of New Zealand’s cherries,apricots......especially around Roxborough, nectarines, apples and grapes. If you are in Alexander in spring you might fit in the annual "Blossom Festival".

As well as mountain and snow sports....skiing and snowboarding, hunting and fishing are also big in this area where huge stations provide excellent areas for wild animals.

With vast expanses of tussock country mountain biking, horse riding and 4WD expeditions are popular activities.

With arts and and crafts, and historic areas of interest to explore Central Otago has plenty to do.

Towns in Central Otago

Central Otago is divided into several areas

  • Wanaka
  • Cromwell
  • Alexandra
  • Lake Hawea
  • Bannockburn
  • Clyde

Wanaka on the edge of beautiful Lake Wanaka is a popular holiday destination for the skiing fraternity and summer holiday makers alike. Click here to see more information on this beautiful area . Next to Queenstown Wanaka would be considered a “must see” destination to include in your itinerary.

Cromwell....located at the junction of the Clutha and Kawarau Rivers was once a valley of fruit orchards. Flooded to create the Clyde Hydro Dam the bonus is lovely Lake Dunstan where fishing, boating and walks are popular.Cromwell also has the dubious honour of hosting the annual New Zealand Cherry Spitting Competition. Central to both Lindis and Haast Passes, Queenstown, Arrowtown, Wanaka and other major tourist destinations in the wider Otago area.... you will almost certainly have a stop here as you explore Central Otago.

Central Otago Activities and Attractions

Cycling

THE OTAGO RAIL TRAIL - is high on every New Zealanders list of things to do these days. A 150 kilometre trail through what was once a railway line runs between Middlemarch and Clyde. Plan for 3-5 days, for this ride.

You do need to book cycles, accommodation and transport, as this is a very popular activity. You can actually walk, cycle or ride horseback along this trail.

There is a plethora of bike rides in this area ranging from easy to for those who are fit and experienced. Naseby Forest and the banks of the Clutha River have cycle tracks to enjoy. Check Information centers in Central Otago.

The winter ski fields are all within easy driving - The Remarkables, Coronet Peak, Treble Cone, Cardrona, and Waiora Snow Farm offer plenty of choice with fields suited to all levels of skiing and snowboarding ability.

Ice skating and curling are popular winter sports.

Hiking and Walking

There are many walks n the area. I suggest a trip to the Information Centre will give you the best detailed information on walks and hikes you might like to do.Explore Central Otago goldfields, tussock country and riversides.....there are walking and cycling tracks throughout.

Golf

With 11 golf courses keen golfers have no reason to suffer withdrawal symptons while on their holidays in New Zealand!

Gold Panning

There are several companies that do gold panning tours...sometimes combined with a 4WD out into the back country. The stories and history in this area are fascinating....and panning your own gold is a real thrill.... children love it.

Jet Boating

For an adrenaline fix there is nothing like a jetboat ride to get that rush! There are several companies operating on the rivers. Choose a jetboat ride to suit your nerves!

Fishing

Fly fishing, trout fishing for both brown trout and rainbow trout and salmon fishing are special to the area. With beautiful clean rivers and lakes you can take a guided fly fishing tour around Wanaka and Lake Hawea. These fishing tours are for all levels of experience...beginners to experienced.

More guided tours for all three options are located at Ranfurly or near by Naseby. You get tuition and guidance from experts....which is why many international celebrities come for some quiet time away from the madding crowds.Hatch Fishing – hatchfishing.co.nz

Explore Central Otago Wineries

Although vines were first planted by the early settlers, it was not until 1975 that the first grapes were planted as a trial, so wine growing is relatively young in Otago. It has very quickly established itself as one of New Zealand’s leading winery areas.

The first who planted grapes in the region were told they were mad. However the rocky and often steep hillsides have proved to be perfect for wine....Pinot Noir from Otago is considered some of the best in the world with international awards won. First produced at Gibbston Valley....famous for their cave in 1985..... this area is now the main Pinot Noir producer in New Zealand.

With several areas each with a selection of wineries you could choose to tour one small area or tour several. Personally I like to do an organised wine tour which has lunch included ...where I am not driving!

Areas for Wineries -

  • Gibbston Valley
  • Cromwell
  • Bannockburn
  • Clyde
  • Bendigo
  • Lake Wanaka
  • Alexandra

Otago Wine Trail

With over 30 wineries to choose from you can explore the central Otago Wine Trail either driving yourself or on a tour......it offers many options for wine buffs.

Historic Interest

Being one of the earliest areas to be settled by immigrants on the 1800’s there are many old buildings and places of interest to see when you explore Central Otago.

Old Cromwell Town – When the valley was flooded many of the historic buildings were saved and having been removed they are now being restored and housed at this interesting attraction. With Arts and Crafts and a Saturday market...this is an fascinating visit.

Luggate – Is a historic town with several old buildings including the hotel, old flourmill and several small stone houses of interest.

Taieri Gorge Railway – Take a ride in this old steam train and enjoy the picturesque countryside.

Otago Weather

Otago has a continental climate with often the hottest temperatures in the summer in the country with temperatures of 30-35o sometimes higher recorded in Alexandra....while also invariably the coldest in winter with hoar frosts, snow and frozen lakes.Naseby is New Zealand's coldest town!

Where to Stay

There is a wide variety of accommodation including farmstays and homestays, B&B’s hotels, motels and camping to enjoy as you explore Central Otago. Try some of the farmstays for a unique New Zealand experience.

Getting Around

You will find it easiest to explore Central Otago 's wide ranging attractions if you can self drive.... either rental car or motorhome or campervan. However a good alternative is the hop on hop off buses
