Explore Central Otago Wineries
Although vines were first planted by the early settlers, it was not until 1975 that the first grapes were planted as a trial, so wine growing is relatively young in Otago. It has very quickly established itself as one of New Zealand’s leading winery areas.
The first who planted grapes in the region were told they were mad. However the rocky and often steep hillsides have proved to be perfect for wine....Pinot Noir from Otago is considered some of the best in the world with international awards won. First produced at Gibbston Valley....famous for their cave in 1985..... this area is now the main Pinot Noir producer in New Zealand.
With several areas each with a selection of wineries you could choose to tour one small area or tour several. Personally I like to do an organised wine tour which has lunch included ...where I am not driving!
