Fiordland - A World Heritage Site

Fiordland has been a World Heritage Site since 1986. In 1990 the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area was extended to include Fiordland, Westland and Mt Cook National Parks.

This area..... with some of the highest rainfall in the world has magnificent rainforest...........many parts are still relatively untouched. The coastline is indented with numerous Sounds or fiords while lakes, rivers, streams and cataracts all add to the natural water features that make this such a special area.Due to this abundance of scenic beauty and the many outdoor activities available it is a wonderful and popular destination for holidays in New Zealand.

Enjoy this Video of Fiordland

Tramping Tracks

The beautiful mountains and forest are accessed by a number of walking tracks....the most famous of which is the Milford Track This 4 day hike is a magnificent walk with ever changing scenery. The Sutherland Falls are a highlight.....but the whole track is very beautiful. You can do it either as a “freedom walker”...where you still need to book a hut space. Or in a tour where meals are all provided and the accommodation is relatively luxurious for a tramping track! Other popular walks are the

Popular Tours

Milford Sound - is the jewel in the Fiordland crown and currently on the nominated list for one of the 7 Wonders of the World."! A boat trip on Milford Sound should definitely be on your list of “to do’s” if you are visiting the South Island.

Doubtful Sound is another popular tour which includes visiting the Manapouri Underground Power Station. This is a fabulous trip with the boat trip across the lake, wild life and the power station all in one tour. There are also highly recommended tours on Dusky Sound

More Fiordland Activities

Kayaking or boat cruises on the lakes are a pleasant way of seeing the abundant marine wildlife and lakeside scenery.

Flights in small planes or helicopter are another popular way to view the stunning scenery.

Te Anau

Located on the edge of Lake Te Anau this is the main town that services the area, and a good place to find accommodation. There are several interesting activities based in Te Anau including an evening boat tour across the lake to the glow worm caves.

Climate

Fiordland has some adverse weather with strong winds... and very high rainfall. With averages over 7200 mm of rain a year this is one of the wettest regions on earth! But it is this rain that creates the amazing rain forest and stunning waterfalls that make the region so scenic.

What to Wear

Be prepared for cold, windy and wet weather....with snow in winter. This can at times affect the roads and access. Summer will also require warm clothes. This region does not usually ever experience very hot weather. As is always best in New Zealand... layers of clothes work best.
