Finding good Gisborne restaurants and cafes will not be difficult from the wide selection located in the city.

We could not try many in our time in the area but were impressed with the Gisborne restaurants and cafes reviewed below.
altThe Works-Cafe-Gisborne.jpg The Works Cafe– is located in an historic brick building........all that remains of the old freezing works located at the Port. Unfortunately this was demolished to make way for more wharf area. With a roaring fire, on a cold winter’s day the restaurant has a friendly appeal.

We found the owner, Tony very chatty, and interesting, giving us some history and providing us with a book to look at while we waited for our very delicious lunch of creamy abalone soup and fresh home made bread. Accompanied by a Viognier wine from their own Goldvines Estate.

alt.Gisborne-The Wharf-Cafe-Bar-Restaurant.jpg We had planned to get back for the wine tasting session between 3-5 p.m. but didn’t make it. We’ll save that for another day. They also served excellent coffee.

The Wharf – Coffee fanatics we tried the Wharf, and returned twice more. We enjoying sitting overlooking the boats in the harbour as we sipped on the most excellent coffee you could expect anywhere.

The baking of the day which changes daily - was all fresh and delicious..................date scones, plain scones with cream and jam and savoury muffins.

The meals wafting past looked very good........and colleagues from our Conference who had eaten there one night were very impressed with their meals.

Bushmere Arms - is a little way out of Gisborne in the country at Waerenga-a-hika Our conference dinner was held in the stunning domed conservatory. A huge addition to the traditional panelled lounge room, and very much in keeping with the style of this historic house. It was a wonderful place for weddings and conference meals as well as regular restaurant meals I am sure.

The buffet meal was excellent with a selection of salads, hot and cold meat and vegetables, breads etc Desserts were served at the table with three choices - sticky date pudding, fresh fruit brandy basket and a cheese cake followed by coffee.

The service was all one could ask for.It was a most enjoyable meal.

The Meetings Irish Ale House - Right next to the Emerald Hotel this Ale House with all the ambience of an Irish Pub was popular with locals and those in the hotel. The meals were well priced and you had the choice of everything from a simple home made beef pie, peas and mashed potatoes, to a substantial pan fried fish dinner which was excellent.

We did have a longer wait than usual the second night we ate here and they gave us a free dessert for our patience.Oatmeal caramel pie and apple strudel were both very good........the portions huge!

We joined the crowds to watch the rugby on the big screen.

Fettucine Brothers in Peel Street - This was one restaurant I didn’t try but would have liked to was. This looked like a great Italian restaurant with plenty of ambience. Apparently it is popular with the locals..................always a good test of a successful place to eat!
