Heaphy Track - A Great New Zealand Walk

The Heaphy Track is one of the most popular of the Great New Zealand Walks located in the northern part of the South Island. Whether you go for the full tramp through gorgeous country, or just do a day walk part of the way...........this is a track well worth spending some time exploring.

The Heaphy track starts from the junction of the Brown and Aorere Rivers at Brown Hut, Collingwood . You walk through tussock country , forests, nikau palms – New Zealand’s beautiful native palm which grow in abundance in this area....... to Karamea on the West Coast.

Karamea, with a unique character is always worth a visit and you could include a day walk for a taste of what a Great New Zealand Walk has to offer.

Classified as a walking track, the Heaphy is well formed and suitable for anyone reasonably fit and well equipped. Like many of New Zealand’s Great Walk Tracks there are swing bridges crossing the rivers.........so you won’t need to get your feet wet! And great fun to cross!

The track takes four to six days to walk, with seven huts and four campsites requiring a prepaid fee. Bookings are also required. This is a popular New Zealand walk, so ensure you book well in advance, if you want a berth!

NOTE: These huts are prebooked and available for all those who have booked their bed. I have heard of one or two overseas visitors who thought because they arrived first they had the full run of the hut..........and telling people to walk on to the next one! This could in fact even be dangerous, in adverse weather.

Nelson, Takaka, Westport and Karamea are the nearest towns.

Take a Day Walk along part of the Heaphy Track

If you do not have a lot of time, I can highly recommend travelling up to Karamea and walking a small part of the track to get some feel for this wonderful New Zealand tramping experience. You start by crossing a swing bridge.....the kids will love it!

Or walk part of the beginning of the track near Takaka.
