Walking the Milford Track
A Map and Information to Plan Your Walk!
The Milford Track is a 53.5 kilometres track located in Fiordland National Park..... a New Zealand World Heritage Area in the South West of the South Island.
DOC - New Zealand’s Department of Conservation are responsible for the care and conservation of this Track – probably New Zealand’s most well known ..........and many New Zealander's and travellers aspire to walk it at least once in their lifetime.
Freedom Walker or Guided Tour?

You can be a “freedom walker” and do the Milford Track independently........... or take a guided tour where you have meals and accommodation laid on. There are three DOC huts – on the track. Those on guided tours have separate huts. There is only one company Ultimate Hikes who run organised Milford Track hikes during the peak walking season. Milford Track starts at the head of Lake Te Anau and finishes at Milford Sound. The nearest town is Te Anau where you can find accommodation, shopping and hire services for equipment. Queenstown is a two hour drive. If you don’t have time for the full 4 day three night walk which requires bookings, transport and much preparation..............you can do day walks on the track with no bookings required........... although you won’t get to see the most scenic part and will be limited by the boat transport available.
Walking Milford Track
It is many years since I did this wonderful walk as a “freedom walker”. You arrive........and leave........ by boat........so get a Milford Cruise as part of the experience! The Track offers walkers spectacular scenery with forest, alpine views ........ Pamplona Icefield and waterfalls including the Sutherland Falls - which at 580 metres high is one of the world’s highest waterfalls. It is a 1 ˝ hour side walk although you get a great view near Dumpling Hut. Starting at Glade House you pass through beech forests as you walk beside the Clinton River through the Clinton Valley. Passing above Lake Mintaro at the base of the MacKinnon Pass you climb up to the Pass ........the highest point .Here you can come across exquisite alpine flora and fauna. From the Pass you descend down to the Arthur Valley taking you through mixed rainforest to be picked up by boat at Sandfly Point. .

Bookings for the Milford Track
The main season is October to April........and the track could be busy. You do not need to book in the off season.......(May to mid October), but you must purchase backcountry hut tickets ($15 per adult (18 years and over), 17 and under – free) or a Back country Hut Pass, available at any Department of Conservation Office or Visitor Centre. Book or deposit your hut tickets in the hut ticket box. Be Safe - Record Your Pass You should also ensure you record your Backcountry Hut Pass number beside your name in the hut. This helps people know where you have been if you do not arrive at your destination when expected. Taking safety measures when tramping in New Zealand is essential!
Highly Recommended Walk - Prepare Well
You do need to read and take careful note of the possible conditions and safety notes. I well remember the notes left in Visitor Books in the huts where people had been caught with snow and flooding! I highly recommend this as a wonderful experience. I also highly recommend you do all that the website suggests to enjoy a safe and trouble free tramp!COPY and PASTE THE LINK BELOW to DOWNLOAD and READ the PDF BROCHURE WITH COMPLETE INFORMATION ON WALKING MILFORD TRACK - including booking forms. http://www.doc.govt.nz/upload/documents/parks-and-recreation/tracks-and-walks/southland/milford-track-brochure.pdf
