New Zealand Bungy Jumping

Over 10 different jump experiences - novice to extreme!

New Zealand bungy jumping has become one of our most popular tourist activities. AJ Hackett with Henry Van Asch- were the inventors of the bungy jump as we know it. Hackett is the name synonomous with bungy these days. He is a New Zealander who had seen a film of the local people in Vanuatu basically bungee jumping from simple devices, as part of their manhood rituals. He decided to have a go, with all the safety features built in.

Now locals and tourists can experience the adrenaline rush of free falling into a river, or harbour. We have over 10 different New Zealand bungy jumping experiences from small, and not too heart pounding to the extreme, ultimate, adrenaline rush.

New Zealand Bungee / bungy jumping is high on the activities list of many tourists. You could almost plan a trip through New Zealand trying different bungies, several unique in the world, en route.

Auckland has two of New Zealand's bungee/bungy experiences plus our newest thrill! Not quite a bungee but the adrenaline rush will equal any bungy jump!

1.The Auckland Harbour Bridge Bungy Jump – A 40 m drop to sea level with a choice of splash options! Yes- you get to choose a mere touch of the hand, a head and shoulders dip or a full dunking in the sea.

NOTE: If you are travelling through the country the New Zealand Quantum Bungy Jump Leap Package includes the Auckland Harbour Bridge Bungee Jump, Kawarau Bridge(Queenstown), Nevis Highwire and The Ledge – (all Queenstown.)

2.Auckland Sky Tower –

( Auckland Sky Jump)

This is a different experience to classic New Zealand bungy jumping as you are in a suit and special harness on a cable controlled wire. You have the choice of going feet first or gliding head first from the Observation deck to the Sky City Plaza 192 m below. Sky Jump is apparently the highest public tower based jump in the world, if you are up for the challenge.

3.Auckland Sky Walk – ( Auckland Sky Tower) – This is our newest adventure activity. The only other like it in the world, is in Macau. Dressed in a special suit and harness, you walk outside the observation tower on a pergola with nothing between you and the 192 m drop to the ground. You do the full 360 degree circuit with the most amazing views of Auckland.

4.Rotorua Bungy – This 43 m tower is at Agroventures, Paradise Valley Rd, Ngongataha, which is about 9 kms from the city centre. You could incorporate the luge, at Skyline rides, Rainbow Springs and the Sheep show at the agradome, for a busy day all in the same area.

5.Taupo Bungy – at 202 Spa Rd. This is a 47 m platform above the Waiaraki River. You can do either a solo or tandem jump. This is the most popular North Island Bungee jump.

6. Mokai Gravity Canyon – 20 minutes from Taihape in the central North Island ( you can take this route to Wellington) .There are several choices here. The highest tandem swing in the world.

The Extreme Flying Fox – 170 m above the Rangitaikei River – (which also has good white water rafting.)

The Giant Swing – a 50 m fall from the Mokai Bridge.

An 80 m solo or tandem bungy jump in the Mokai Gorge.

7.Thrill Seeker Canyon – at Waiau River Bridge in the South Island near Hanmer Springs. This smaller bungy jump is 35 m so a good first attempt before trying some of the higher ones.

8.Mt Hutt Bungy Jump – This is a unique experience for skiers and snowboarders. Jumping from a 40 metre high platform 1600 m above sea level on Mt Hutt ski field, you can detach your harness and ski or snowboard to the triple chairlift.

9.Kawarau Bridge – Not only theFIRST New Zealand bungy jump site, but the first anywhere. It was here where AJ Hackett introduced the world to bungee. Situated on the road between Queenstown and Cromwell, near Nevis Bluff and Gibbston Valley reknowned for its wines – you can recover with a glass of wine after taking this 43 m solo or tandem jump. You get to choose to stay dry or take a slight dip in the river.

Shuttles run from Queenstown at 9.00am, 12.00pm or 3.00pm from the Station Building.

Check your courage at the Bungy Centre, where the Bungy Dome has a simulated bungee jump.

10.The Ledge – You choose from several options for your favoured fear factor.

The Ledge Bungy Sky Swing is another option – but if none of these appeal just watching is fascinating.

11.Skippers Canyon – ( no rental cars allowed on this road) This is pioneer goldmining country. It is a 71 m jump to the Shotover River Gorge. Bookings for this at the AJ Hackett company office.

12. Nevis Highwire – The highest bungy jump in New Zealand from a platform 134 m above the Nevis River ( 32 kms from Queenstown.)You get there by 4WD through a high country sheep station. You will then be harnessed to a cable car which will give you amazing views as you swing over the river.

This is the only one of its kind in the world. If you have done the rest - this is the ultimate test!
