New Zealand BusTravel

See the country in comfort!

New Zealand bus travel is a good option if you are not a driver, lack confidence driving in a strange country or just prefer to be driven.Going by bus also means you can give your undivided attention to the glorious New Zealand scenery you are going to be driving through.Ever changing scenic delights will keep you glued to your window.

Another bonus is that you are so high up you should get some excellent, unencumbered views. It is also a good way of meeting other travellers, which is always interesting, specially if you are travelling on your own.Often you will hear about activities and places your bus travel companions have enjoyed and recommend around New Zealand.

Individual fares or a Travel Pass?

There are numerous choices of buses that do a circuit around New Zealand. Tourists can use a bus pass which allows them to get on and off as they wish. I have listed some options for you to look at. It will depend on what level of comfort you are wanting, your age, preferred style of travel, where you want to go, and a range of other factors, which one suits you best.

NEW ZEALAND BUS TRAVEL PASSES

Here are a choice of bus passes that give you the option of hopping and off as you please. With suggested itineraries and extensive route cover you could see all you wanted to of New Zealand using one of these passes. Check each site for their specific details. Each pass has slightly different criteria and validity time frames.

NEWMANS- (rated 5 star)

They are comfortable, air conditioned, have toilets on board, have a commentary and on some routes offer commentaries in Japanese, German,Mandarin or Spanish

INTERCITY- (rated 3 star)

are also very comfortable, air conditioned, but no commentary or facilities on board.

Their network covers the whole of the country, and can be used in conjunction with a Kiwi Coach Passor Kiwi Combo Pass 3-in-1 or 2-1 tickets which combine with rail and ferry.

The Intercity Travel Pass is another choice. It is a fantastic way to travel, where ever you want, relatively cheaply. You will not have the opportunity to stop here and there at whim, but as you can get on and of at destinations that attract you, you can tailor yourself an exciting New Zealand holiday using the bus destinations as a basis.

It will depend on how much travel you plan to do, which will suit best.If you are just going from A to B, an individual fare may be more appropriate.

Kiwi Combo 3-in-1 or 2-1 tickets ( valid 12 months) allow unlimited bus travel on Newmans and Intercity coaches, One Cook Strait Ferry Crossing and 2 one way train journeys on the Tranz scenic network.

Book your Travelpass with the Intercity Group here, for a comfortable bus trip.

Using a Kiwi Coach Pass which is valid for a year from the first date of travel for 3 - 23 days is another fantastic way of seeing the country.

There are 10 different options depending on where you want to go but the ultimate Total New Zealand Experience would result in an excellent trip to absolutely everywhere most visitors usually choose to go for $729 for adults,$489 for children.

As it is valid for a year you could get an huge amount of travel in even if you are working or staying longer term somewhere.

Another very cheap option worth checking out is the Nakedbus.com This would certainly suit backpackers with fares as low as a dollar. You need to read up on their system.

Have a look at the Magic Bus which offers discounted fares and is a very well priced option for backpackers or independent travellers.

The Kiwi Experience is yet another well priced bus for backpackers and usually the younger set.

WITHIN EACH CITY/TOWN

Each city or town has a local bus system. Some will have bus passesa day pass you can sometimes also use for other modes of transport such as ferries or trains. Or special tickets that do a circuit of the sightseeing destinations you will most likely want to visit.

Check with the local Tourist Information Office, or bus driver. They are all different.

You can combine your New Zealand bus travel with New Zealand Rail travel , and you will also need to use New Zealand ferries if you plan on visiting both the North and South Islands.

With so many choices you should have a wonderful holiday in New Zealand.I may be biased but it is one of the most beautiful countries you could have chosen to travel to.
