SNOW REPORT

A New Zealand Snow report is important if you are planning a skiing or snowboarding trip to the mountains. Checking a snow report is an important part of any trip to any of our ski fields. The report will give you all the relevant information for the day including

• Snow conditions

• Whether the skifield is open

• Weather conditions

• Snow levels

• Which chairlifts are open

The Weather

The weather and heavy snowfall is always a catch twenty two isn't it. You want plenty of good powder, but it can mean many incoming roads to ski fields may be closed with adverse weather conditions.

If you are driving, chains should be carried as they are a necessity in most areas for safety. Unexpected weather changes can leave people vulnerable if they do not go well prepared.

CLOTHING ESSENTIALS FOR THE SNOW

Remember weather conditions can change rapidly on the mountains. Ensure you are dressed for the worst! • Warm, waterproof jackets

• Warm Hats

• Gloves

• Scarves

• Good boots or shoes are essential.Shoes with smooth soles and no grip are dangerous! • Layers are excellent as it can get warm on the slopes.

• Wear wool or polyprolene. Cotton gets cold and heavy.Merino wool is fantastic - light, warm and can be layered

PREPARE FOR ANY EVENT!

Have snack bars, fruit, hot thermos'and drinks in your car. Many a visitor to the snow has ended up staying a lot longer than they expected! It is nice to have some food and drink if you end up snowed in.

A FIRST AID kit is an excellent idea, with basics first Aid equipment. Plasters, sunscreen, panadol, bandages, antiseptic cream, anica - great for knocks and bruises.

Be sure to take extra medication if you take any.

A warm rug and spare towels may also be useful!Even after a few hours it is nice to have these things on hand. Especially if you are taking children.

If you are having a few days snowboarding or skiing it would be worth taking out a special travel insurance to cover snowboarding and skiing.
