Do YOU have a favourite New Zealand Walk?...or hike or tramp! Please share here!
Tramping or Hiking holidays can be a series of short walks, full day trips, or on any of the New Zealand Great Walks Circuit where many tracks are several days long with many routes covering around 70 kilometres. You will experience New Zealand bush and forests, with unique flora and fauna, birdlife, rivers and mountains. Some tracks are better developed than others with board walks, and highly maintained huts and pathways. Others may be less well used and over grown, or with less distinct tracks.
Ensure Your Safety - Be Prepared
The best insurance for your New Zealand walking holidays is being well prepared for a safe and enjoyable tramp or hike. Even a day trip requires you to plan for perhaps a longer time. Take extra food, safety gear and tell people where you are going, and when to expect your return. Be sure you DO tell them you have returned!
New Zealand Great Walks
Several of the best and most popular New Zealand walking holidays are on tramping tracks found in the South West of the South Island– a wilderness area that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Mt Cook, Mt Aspiring and Fiordland....... this area has magnificent mountains, gorgeous fiords, untouched bush and native forest. Many areas in the North Island also have well known, popular tracks. These are all part of the New Zealand Great Walks .
Popular South Island Tramping/ Hiking Tracks
- Milford Track
- Routeburn Track
- Kepler Track
- Greenstone Track
- Capels Track
- Heaphy Track
Milford Track – Fiordland Milford Track is probably the most internationally famous of New Zealand walking holidays , and a very popular 4 day hike or tramp, either as a “freedom walker, or on a guided tour where meals and accommodation are provided. You go in and out by boat. The Routeburn Track The Routeburn Track is shorter than the Milford Track and located in the same area ........a popular alternative to Milford Track. Kepler Track Kepler Track is different terrain to the Milford and Routeburn Tracks, and offers a 70 kilometre walk for those of average fitness. It is well formed with modern huts. Heaphy Track Heaphy Track This another lovely walking track of around 70 kilometres taking about 4 to 5 days walking. Located at the northern point of the South Island you will enjoy both coastal and forest scenery. Abel Tasman National Park Abel Tasman National Park at the top of the South Island, is one of the most popular of New Zealand’s National Parks with both kayaking tours and the 52 kilometre walking track, which is part of the Great Walks system. All the streams have bridges, but there are tidal crossings which can only be crossed within a few hours either side of low tide, so you do need to plan your tramp. The track takes around three to five days walking and can be walked either way. The huts and campsites available require a fee and bookings are essential. This area gets busy! Day walks are free. Visitors can walk into the park from the carparks, catching water taxis to any of the lovely beaches along the track or kayak along the coast........you can also do a 3-5 day kayaking tour along this gorgeous coastline. If time is limited you can also do a day kayak. North Island Tramping/Hiking Tracks
Tongariro Alpine CrossingTongariro Alpine Crossing is located in the central North Island, and is perhaps our most popular New Zealand walking holidays day hike. 17 kilometres with a possible side trip up Mt Ngauruhoe. With beautiful scenery....Emerald Lakes, and volcanic plains where Mt Doom in Lord of the Rings was filmed....... you can either overnight in a prebooked hut, or walk the distance in a few hours. Lake Waikaremoana Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk is a 46 kilometre 3 to 4 day tramping and hiking track located in the Te Urewera National Park. Following the shore of Lake Waikaremoana, there are 5 huts and five campsites which you must book prior to leaving. You will walk through a range of vegetation including the beech forest on Panekire Bluffs and dense rainforest. The abundant birdlife is a feature. Considered a moderate tramp, you will enjoy magnificent scenery, swimming and fishing . The track is able to be walked year round............. but as with any New Zealand walking holidays venture, I advise checking weather conditions before you go. Mt Taranaki Mt Taranaki has a network of walking tracks ranging from short, relatively easy walks to 1-2 day demanding tracks, where suitable equipment for alpine terrain is required. Some tracks are easy and don't require a high level of fitness, while there is a series of longer, steeper walks requiring a medium fitness .The forest here is unique, and very beautiful. The Whanganui River The Whanaganui River is as popular for it’s kayaking as for tramping or hiking. Located on the east coast of the North Island in Taranaki....... the river winds its way from the mountains to the Tasman Sea. Forest edges the river which runs through the Whanganui National Park. The 145 kilometre river expedition is usually done in kayaks or sometimes Canadian canoes starting at Taumarunui and finishing at Pipiriki............ taking 5 days. A shorter 3 day journey from Whakahoro to Pipiriki is also possible. Although better known for the kayaking trip, the Whanganui is also part of New Zealand's Great Walks network. Some Favourite Day Walks I Recommend
Do YOU have a favourite New Zealand Walk?...or hike or tramp! Please share here!
Waiorongomai Valley – Wairere Falls WAIRERE FALLS - Goodwin Rd, Te Aroha Wairere Falls is a lovely walk, just a 20 minute drive south of Te Aroha. From the car park at Goodwin Rd this picturesque track features mossy green boulders and bridged mountain stream crossings. It is one of my favourite tracks and well worth detouring to. The walk takes 45 minutes to a viewing platform from where you can see the Wairere Falls ............a spectacular 153m, two stage drop. For the energetic walkers the track continues another 45 minutes up to another lookout platform at the top of the Falls...... with a magnificent view looking back down the valley and across the Waikato Plains. Highly recommended as a lovely day tramp or hike Cathedral Cove – Coromandel Cathedral Cove is near Hahei on the Coromandel Peninsula. You can take the walking track from the car park to Gemstone Bay, Stingray Bay and beautiful Cathedral Cove, with it’s distinctive natural rock arch. Cathedral Cove is a pristine very beautiful Coromandel beach ...........home to some of New Zealand’s most spectacular coast line. The beach is only accessed by this walk or by boat. NOTE: The north-western end of the beach at Stingray Bay has been closed due to the danger of falling rocks. Lake Rotopounamu Lake Rotopounamu (‘greenstone lake’) sits on the side of Mt Pihanga. It is on the main road through from Taupo to National Park, so easy to find. The circuit of this beautiful lake is a special favorite. We even came across a family with Dad in his mobility scooter half way around on one occasion. We still wonder how they managed it! It is a great spot for the family. Beginning opposite the carpark the track climbs gently uphill. At the junction the track to the left goes to Ten Minute Beach which is a pleasant picnic and swimming spot in summer. The walk into the lake takes about 20 minutes. Do the full circuit for a lovely very scenic walk. Haruru Falls Boardwalk - Waitangi Haruru Falls is an easy walk from opposite Waitangi Hotel. It is a lovely walk across a boardwalk and through native bush to the Haruru Falls.
