Purangi Estate Winery - Cooks Beach Coromandel
by Gail
(Auckland)
Purangi Winery near Cooks Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula has a unique ambiance. This rustic winery with it's over grown garden and cats and kittens sleeping in the sun outside the door, has a very comprehensive range of fruit wines and liqueurs....everything from citrus fruits, stone fruits, passionfruit and New Zealand's favourite feijoa....a fruit originally from South America with a unique floral flavour. Purangi Wines also have their own range of ciders, beer and even tea!
We dropped in out of curiosity and thoroughly enjoyed sampling the many wines, fortified wines and liqueurs..... while the owner regaled us with interesting stories of the history of the winery and the different wines....and the many tourists and their reactions to some of the more unusual flavours....especially to the distinctive feijoa liqueur.
With teas, preserves and other organic produce all made from produce on the property, this is a fascinating winery to visit.
You will also be able to read up on the historic Captain Cook exploration of the Purangi River which ended right here on this very property.
Well fortified, we enjoyed a delicious pizza cooked in the traditional pizza oven under kiwi fruit vines laden with fruit. If the weather is not suitable for outdoor dining you can retreat to the fireside in "The Buttery Restaurant"
While this property is now on the market....it is well worth a visit while it is still up and running. You won't experience anything quite like it anywhere else!
It is at 450 Purangi Rd....the main road into Cooks Beach.
