Te Anau - Fiordland's Main Town

Te Anau is the main town for tourists who plan to go to Milford Sound independently and sits on the edge of Lake Te Anau..... with Mt Luxmore and the Murchison mountains creating a spectacular backdrop.



Being the only town in the area the township has all the required facilities for the large numbers of tourist that use the town as a base on their holidays in New Zealand for exploring this spectacular area.



SHOPPING

The Te Anau shopping centre is the place for stocking up on camping and tramping gear and provisions. This is the closest you will find a good variety of services to Milford Sound, which is a 2 hour drive away.

Activities Around Te Anau

Enjoy a visit to the Glow worm Caves, do some fishing, take a cruise on the lake or do any of the walks in the surrounding area.

Be prepared when walking....you can get information at the Te Anau Tourist Centre. Being a high rainfall area you will need wet weather gear, food and good hiking equipment.

It is from Te Anau that you can prepare for any number of wonderful hikes including

and others. This town caters for trampers who can then return to take a break to rejuvenate before carrying on with their travels.

Getting There



This town is 119km (approx 74 miles) from Milford Sound. The sealed road takes a minimum of 2 hours driving.....but you should allow extra time for stops. This is a very beautiful road trip with several scenic points where you will want to stop and enjoy the magnificent scenery. Motorists are advised to fill vehicles with petrol in Te Anau, although supplies are available at Gunn’s Camp in the Hollyford Valley and at Milford Sound.
