Uniquely New Zealand Holiday Destination Suggestions

by Karen
(Shandong China )

We knew really little about New Zealand before ,and I really want to visit some place characterizing your country. I mean ,if I visit one site only ,where should I go ? Maybe some tourism resort.

Hi Karen

Thanks for your question. You ask about one place that characterizes New Zealand..........that is a little difficult .......... mountains, beaches, bush, and our Maori culture all characterize New Zealand. So I will give you an option in each island as it would depend on what kind of holiday you wanted as well.

Cultural New Zealand Experience – Rotorua

For a cultural experience you would probably find Rotorua in the North Island is your best choice. Maori were the earlier settlers in New Zealand and their culture is quite unique, with beautiful singing and music, dances, and poi........ while the men have war dances using traditional weapons. It is best represented in Rotorua.

Rotorua is a thermal area where you can see traditional Maori villages set amongst the thermal activity........boiling mud pools, geysers, and beautiful scenic areas. There are several lakes in the area, and hot thermal pools.

There are also plenty of family activities such as the

  • Rotorua Agrodome Farm Show
  • At the same location the Rotorua Agroventures – a selection of adrenaline type activities
  • The Luge across the road on Mt Ngongataha is always popular
  • Rainbow Springs Trout Farm and Kiwi Encounter
  • Paradise Springs
  • The Buried Village
are just a few more activities... Click the links for more detailed information.

Queenstown – South Island

If you are looking for scenic New Zealand, the area around Queenstown in the South Island would be a good choice, and is one of the most famous areas. Queenstown is set on the edge of Lake Whakatipu, with mountains behind.

I won’t try and list all the activities ....you can find them if you click the links... but a few I suggest are:
  • Take the TSS Earnslaw historic steamboat to a working sheep station .....typical of this area.
  • There are other back country tours such as Skippers Canyon
  • Much of “Lord of the Rings” was filmed in this area and there are tours to the different film locations
  • Bungy Jumps – several options
  • Arrowtown – a historic gold mining town
  • Coronet Peak is the main ski field near Queenstown
  • Any of the many different adrenaline activities such as white water rafting, jet boating, heli skiing , 4WD adventure
  • Wine Tasting Tour

Tour to Milford Sound

I would also suggest that from Queenstown you took a trip down to Milford Sound which is a very famous New Zealand landmark. You would want to do the boat trip out onto Milford Sound. You see Mitre Peak, waterfalls, and marine life.

It is very beautiful and has been nominated as one of the new wonders of the world. There are day trips, or overnight tours.Have a look at this video of Milford Sound.

New Zealand Resorts

You mention Tourist Resort. Resorts are not probably the most typical New Zealand experience. People tend to tour, either camping or staying in hotels or motels because there is so much to see and do.

Rotorua and Queenstown both have a choice of Resorts so you could combine the two although it depends on the kind of resort you are referring to.

These will have swimming and spa pools, maybe golf, mini golf, tennis, and indoor activities. Each will vary. But not too many will be acres of
grounds where you just spend a week on site.

Millbrook Resort near Queenstown is set on a golf course with its own restaurants. Mostly for golfers, it is well known internationally.

I hope this is helpful Karen.

Kind Regards

Gail
