You don’t need to be a Lord of the Rings Fan to enjoy a trip to the fascinating Weta Cave and shop....when you are in Wellington, on your holidays in New Zealand.

You can see displays of costumes and models from the many movies Weta Workshops have been involved in creating. Their visual effects, makeup and costume design is seen in an incredible number of movies including Lord of the Rings. The shop is more like a museum, and will keep you interested for some time as you take a close look at the often intricate, detailed range of film props, books, collectors items and much more.

The trip out is worth it to see the 20 minute movie showing how Richard Taylor and his wife Tania Rodger got started making puppets and eventually working with Peter Jackson...... bringing his movies to life with their amazing work. They have become the award winning team that they today can list 2 pages of awards ranging from Academy awards, BAFTA Awards and many more covering visual effects, makeup and costumes.

The movie shows some inside detail on how the models are designed and created. Labour intensive, handmade, artistic creations that would rival much that is considered art in any gallery!You meet the artistic team via the film.... and each tells of their work and background.

Warning: Some of the realistic models may be a little gruesome for very small children!

It is free to visit and easy to reach. Take the Number 2 bus to Mirimar, getting off at Camperdown Rd.
